New Skilled Migration Categories for studentsOn 1 July 2001, the Migration Regulations 1994 have been amended to create two new onshore points tested visa classes to enable successful tertiary qualified overseas students in Australia who meet certain requirements, to apply for general skilled migration visas onshore. Prior to 1 July 2001, successful tertiary qualified overseas students in Australia who wished to remain permanently at the end of their studies were required to apply offshore if seeking a visa on the basis of their qualifications and skills. Students were able to send their applications offshore while they remained in Australia, however they were required to be offshore at the time their application is approved. 44,730 skilled migrants were granted visas in the 2000/01, the Australian Federal Government increased the intake to 53,500 for 2002. Flexible Study OptionsStudents whose results are unable to gain entry to universities can apply for Foundation courses initially. These programs (usually taken over one academic year) prepare international students for entry into Australian universities. Students undertake subjects directly related to their preferred university course, as well as English language training for academic purposes. Successful completion of a Foundation Studies program provides students with a guarantee of admission into specific degree courses within participating institutions. Many schools and vocational institutes, as well as universities, offer Foundation Studies programs. Similar flexibility is exist for post graduate studies as well, for instance GMAT results are not necessarily required for all graduate courses.
